Switching Basics
Video switching is the core of live production — selecting which source your audience sees and transitioning between them smoothly.
The preview/program workflow
pMix uses a preview/program model:
- Tap a source in the grid to load it into preview (yellow border)
- Tap the transition button to move it to program (green border)
The audience only sees what’s on program. Preview is your private staging area.
Transition types
pMix includes 11 transition types:

| Cut | Instant switch, no animation |
| Cross Dissolve | Smooth blend between sources |
| Fade | Fade through a solid color (black, white, gray, blue, red, or green) |
| Wipe | Edge wipe from one side |
| Iris | Circular reveal from center or edges |
| Star Wipe | Five-pointed star shape reveal |
| Split | Split screen reveal |
| Cover | New source slides over the old one |
| Cross Zoom | Zoom blur transition |
| Cube | 3D cube rotation |
| Twist | 3D twist rotation |
Each transition (except cut) supports configurable duration, direction (left, right, up, down where applicable), and easing (linear, ease-in, ease-out, ease-in-out).
Quick actions
- Tap a source → set as preview
- Tap the transition button → execute the configured transition (preview → program)
- Double-tap a source → instant cut to program (bypasses preview)
- Long-press the transition button → choose a different transition type from the quick menu
Configuring transitions
Open the Transitions panel to set:
- Type — Select from the 11 transition types
- Duration — How long the transition takes (0.5–3 seconds typical)
- Direction — Which direction the transition moves (for wipe, cover, split, etc.)
- Easing — The acceleration curve of the animation
The configured transition is used whenever you tap the transition button.
Gamepad support
If a gamepad is connected:
- D-pad — Navigate between sources
- A button — Set source as preview
- B button — Execute the configured transition
OSC control
Transitions can be triggered and configured via OSC. See OSC Remote Control for the full address space.
Key OSC commands:
/pmix/cut— Instant cut/pmix/auto— Execute configured transition/pmix/preview/{n}— Set slot n as preview/pmix/program/{n}— Set slot n as program
